Remodeling/New Construction

Nail heads & seams are filled with joint compound (mud) which is made up of --Perlite--Gypsum--calcium carbonate--mica--and crystalline silica.
 

Only 2-5% of the material is Crystalline Silica.  However this material is listed as a serious health hazard. When the dried mud is sanded the particles are small enough to be inhaled. Prolonged or repeated inhalation of crystalline silica can cause  silicosis, a seriously disabling and fatal lung disease.  In fact it is classified as a known human carcinogen.

A report by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) stated there can be dangerously high amounts of dust from sanding and other drywall work.  In fact the report went on to say that even when the dust amounts are within recommended limits, they may not be safe.  The report was based on a study done in Washington DC and Buffalo, New York in 1993.

Dust Mites/Allergies

Once upon a time there were 2 men who lived in the same neighborhood and worked for the same company. They both suffered from allergies.

Tom decided to get rid of the pollen, animal dander and dust mites from his home as much as possible to control his allergies. He called Clean-A-Maniacs to come and clean his air ducts. He was surprised when the contractor showed him with a camera how much dust and debris was in his duct system. The contractor then cleaned the air ducts using a brush and vacuum at the same time. Rodent Droppings/Dead Rodents

Hantaviruses are a type of virus found in rodents in different parts of the world. In the U.S., human Hantavirus infections were first identified in the southwest in 1993. In recent years, sporadic cases have been found in several states. Studies have shown that mice are often infected and appear to be the source of infection.

The virus is carried by rodents such as mice which are found throughout North America. Infected rodents shed the live virus in saliva, droppings and urine. Humans are infected when they inhale microscopic particles that contain viruses from rodent urine or droppings.

Typical symptoms include high fever, muscle aches, cough and headache. After several days, respiratory problems worsen rapidly. The lungs may fill with fluid and victims may die of respiratory failure or shock.

There is no specific treatment for Hantavirus. Physicians have been administering ribavarin, an antiviral drug, on an experimental basis to suspected victims.
